Why Are Dental X-Rays Necessary?

Dental X-rays play a critical role in diagnosing and monitoring periodontal disease, evaluating bone levels, detecting infections, and planning precise treatments such as dental implants or gum surgeries. Many oral health issues begin below the surface—X-rays help us see what the eye cannot.

Skipping recommended X-rays may delay the identification of serious conditions, which can result in more invasive and costly treatment later on.

How Much Radiation Is in a Dental X-Ray?

Modern dental X-rays emit extremely low levels of radiation—so low that they’re considered safe for both adults and children. In fact, with today’s digital X-ray technology, the radiation exposure is drastically lower than traditional film methods, and often comparable to what you’re exposed to naturally in your daily environment.

To put things in perspective:

  • A routine set of dental X-rays exposes you to less radiation than a short airplane flight.
  • A single bitewing X-ray delivers less radiation than the background exposure you receive in one day from sunlight and natural surroundings.

Are There Any Long-Term Risks?

According to the American Dental Association (ADA) and numerous medical studies, the risk from routine dental X-rays is extremely low, especially when digital technology is used. The benefits of early detection and treatment planning far outweigh the minimal exposure involved.

However, if you’re pregnant or have specific health concerns, we encourage you to let us know so we can take any necessary precautions.
