ANTHEM PERIO, LAS VEGAS' CHOICE FOR ADVANCED PERIODONTICS

Approximately 50% of adults are currently suffering from some form of gum disease. Gum disease is an inflammatory condition of the gums and bone caused by bacteria attacking the tissues around your teeth. Because symptoms appear gradually, many patients are not aware they have developed gum disease, and the issue is not identified unless by a periodontist during a regular cleaning or periodontal maintenance exam. Early indications of gum disease include gums that bleed while flossing, gums that have begun to recede, swollen or bright red gums, and/or halitosis. Indications that gum disease has advanced to a more severe stage include teeth that have become loosened or fallen out and the deterioration of the jawbone. Fortunately, gum disease can typically be halted and reversed, especially if caught early enough. Osseous Surgery is a safe and effective procedure commonly performed for patients who have developed gum disease and are not responding to traditional treatment methods, such as scaling and root planing. Osseous surgery corrects gum disease by removing disease-causing bacteria and smoothing out the bone, if necessary. Doing so allows your gum tissue an opportunity to reattach to the bone, which results in reducing the depth of your gum pockets. For more severe cases, a bone graft and/or guided tissue regeneration may also be performed in conjunction with osseous surgery.

Osseous Surgery vs. LANAP

Depending on your particular case, there are times when osseous surgery is the best option and times when LANAP may be the better option. To decide which approach is right for you, consider the following pros and cons.

Osseous Surgery Benefits:

  • Preserves healthy gum tissue
  • Most effective way to correct gum disease
  • Reduces depth of pockets, which decreases likelihood of gum disease developing again
  • Stops bleeding gums
  • Reduces risk of future infection
  • Improves halitosis

Osseous Surgery Drawbacks:

  • More invasive and longer treatment and recovery process compared to LANAP
  • Surgery can cause teeth to appear to be longer than they were before
  • May result in increased tooth sensitivity
  • Unable to treat certain pockets only accessible via LANAP

The Osseous Surgery Procedure

An initial consultation and general examination will be necessary to determine if osseous surgery is the right treatment option for you. During this visit, we will review your health history, discuss your oral health concerns and goals, and examine your teeth, gums, and cheeks to determine your overall health and identify any underlying issues. Following this examination, we will explain available treatment options and answer any questions you have.

If it is determined that osseous surgery is necessary, your follow-up appointment will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Next, a small incision is made in the gums to allow access to the bone and tooth root, after which the accumulated deposits are scraped away and the bone is trimmed and recontoured. When treating more severe cases of gum disease, guided tissue regeneration and/or a bone graft may also be performed at this time; otherwise, the gums will be sutured shut and the procedure will be complete.

Aftercare Following Osseous Surgery

Once your procedure is complete, we will provide post-operative instructions to ensure that you minimize your risk of developing complications and enjoy a fast a recovery time.

Following osseous surgery, it is common to experience sensitivity, swelling, but this can typically be managed using ice packs and over the counter pain relieving medication. If you are prescribed pain relieving medication and/or antibiotics, it is essential to follow the recommended dose until the prescription runs out.

Once you have fully recovered, you can return to your normal diet and self-care practices, however, taking consistent good care of your oral health will reduce the likelihood of needing similar treatments in the future, especially if this procedure was performed because of improper or insufficient self-care. Make it a habit to brush your teeth twice daily (at a minimum) for at least two minutes each time. Also, remember to brush your tongue and cheeks, as well as behind the lower and upper front teeth.

Flossing at least once a day and being mindful of the type of foods and beverages you consume are also important steps to maintaining good oral health. Finally, continuing to schedule regular checkups every six months (or more if necessary) is the most important step you can take to maintain your oral health and identify and correct issues before they develop into something more significant. By following these best practices, you will maximize your recovery process and continue to enjoy good oral health!
