Sinus Lift IN LAS VEGAS & HENDERSON, NV

ANTHEM PERIO, LAS VEGAS' CHOICE FOR ADVANCED PERIODONTICS

A sinus lift is a safe and effective procedure commonly performed for patients who are going to have dental implants placed in their upper back teeth. When the maxillary sinuses are too close to the jawbone, it is necessary to move the sinus membrane upward to create space for a bone graft to be placed. After the bone graft has fully healed, there will be sufficient bone available to support a dental implant. There are several different types of dental implants, but all involve the placement of artificial titanium tooth roots that are strategically placed in your jawbone. Over time, these titanium posts will fuse with your natural bone, after which a crown can be placed to the now adhered post. A sinus lift followed by a dental implant is one of the most effective methods for returning patients to their normal daily activities. There are a variety of grafting materials that may be used, including donor bone, bone that is harvested from your own body, or graft made of synthetic material.

The Sinus Lift Procedure

An initial consultation and general examination will be necessary to determine if a sinus lift followed by a dental implant is the right treatment option for you. During this visit, we will review your health history, discuss your oral health concerns and goals, and examine your teeth, gums, and cheeks to determine your overall health and identify any underlying issues. Following this examination, we will explain available treatment options and answer any questions you have.

If it is determined that a sinus lift is necessary, your follow-up appointment will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and/or sedation. Next, an incision is made to expose your jawbone, after which the sinus membrane is lifted. Once lifted, there will be sufficient space to place the graft, after which growth factors or membranes will be placed on top and the area will be sutured shut. Once the graft has facilitated the growth of a sufficient amount of bone, which can take anywhere from four months to one year, the dental implant can be placed.

Aftercare Following a Sinus Lift

Once the sinus lift procedure is complete, we will provide post-operative instructions to ensure that you minimize your risk of developing complications and enjoy a fast a recovery time. It is important to understand that it may take between four months to one year to fully complete the recovery process. During the initial stage of recovery, it is important to avoid blowing your nose and/or sneezing if possible. Patients who have allergies may want to begin taking a decongestant during this time. It is also common to experience sensitivity and swelling following the procedure, but this can typically be managed using ice packs and over the counter pain relieving medication. If you are prescribed pain relieving medication and/or antibiotics, it is essential to follow the recommended dose until the prescription runs out.

You can begin brushing your teeth the day following surgery, however it is important to brush gently. Once you have fully recovered, you can return to your normal diet and self-care practices; however, taking consistent good care of your oral health will reduce the likelihood of needing similar treatments in the future, especially if this procedure was performed because of improper or insufficient self-care. Make it a habit to brush your teeth twice daily (at a minimum) for at least two minutes each time. Also, remember to brush your tongue and cheeks, as well as behind the lower and upper front teeth.

Flossing at least once a day and being mindful of the type of foods and beverages you consume are also important steps to maintaining good oral health and preserving the integrity of your implants. Finally, continuing to schedule regular checkups every six months (or more if necessary) is the most important step you can take to maintain your oral health and identify and correct issues before they develop into something more significant. By following these best practices, you will increase the likelihood that your graft will be a success and maximize the longevity of your implants!
