ANTHEM PERIO, LAS VEGAS' CHOICE FOR ADVANCED PERIODONTICS

Wilckodontics (periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics) is a safe, effective, and efficient procedure commonly performed for patients (especially youth) who require orthodontic support to straighten their teeth. Wilckodontics has become an increasingly common and popular method for straightening teeth because it significantly minimizes the time required to achieve results. The Wilckodontics procedure achieves this by enhancing how the periodontium responds to forces by softening the bone tissue, which makes it easier for teeth to move to proper alignment.

Benefits of Wilckodontics

Although Wilckodontics is a viable treatment for adults (and nearly all patients who have all of their permanent teeth and relatively healthy gums and teeth), it is especially popular for younger patients, due to it significantly reducing the time required to wear braces. Because of its significant reduction in treatment time, parents typically schedule the Wilckodontics procedure near the end of the school year or early in the summer. Scheduling this procedure at these times allows children to become accustomed to the feel of braces and minimizes the time spent wearing braces in front of their peers, which can cause feelings of self-consciousness or anxiety for some youth.

Additional benefits for patients who have the Wilckodontics procedure performed include the following:

  • Long-term improvement of teeth stability
  • Low risk and high success rate
  • Increased strength of alveolar bone
  • May reduce or eliminate the need for jaw surgery or tooth extraction
  • Teeth movement is less uncomfortable due to softened jaw bone
  • Results in a healthy, aesthetically pleasing smile
  • Viable treatment option for nearly all patients

The Wilckodontics Procedure

An initial consultation and general examination will be necessary to determine if Wilckodontics is the right treatment option for you. During this visit, we will review your (or your child’s) health history, discuss oral health concerns and goals, and examine the teeth, gums, and cheeks to determine overall health and identify any underlying issues. Following this examination, we will explain available treatment options and answer any questions you have.

If it is determined that Wilckodontics is the right treatment option, the follow-up appointment will begin with administration of a local anesthetic and sedation. Once you are adequately numbed and/or sedated, the gum tissue covering your teeth is pulled back, which allows us to cut the alveolar bone and remove part of the bone surface. Removing part of this surface demineralizes the bone, and results in the bone having to create calcium to heal itself, which can take between three to eight weeks. While this healing process is occurring, the bones are softer, making it easier for the teeth to reach their optimal position. As an added benefit, when the alveolar bone is done healing, it will be even stronger than it was before. Following this (unless the braces were placed on your teeth prior to surgery), traditional braces are placed and tested for proper fit in order to secure the teeth in place and begin the process of realignment.

Although total treatment time to reach proper alignment will vary from patient to patient, Wilckodontics tends to reduce the time required to wear braces by three to eight months.

Aftercare Following Wilckodontics

Following the Wilckodontics procedure, it is common to experience sensitivity and mild pain, but this can typically be managed using over the counter pain relieving medication. Once you have fully recovered, you can return to your normal diet and self-care practices, however, it is important to continue taking consistent good care of your oral health. Make it a habit to brush your teeth twice daily (at a minimum) for at least two minutes each time. Also, remember to brush your tongue and cheeks, as well as behind the lower and upper front teeth.

Flossing at least once a day and being mindful of the type of foods and beverages you consume are also important steps to maintaining good oral health. Finally, continuing to schedule regular checkups every six months (or more if necessary) is the most important step you can take to maintain your oral health and identify and correct issues before they develop into something more significant. By following these best practices, you will maximize your recovery process and continue to enjoy good oral health!
