These days, patients with missing teeth have a number of options available to them to replace those missing teeth and restore their smile! A dental bridge and individual dental implants are just two choices that we will discuss here. Each has its own pros and cons and it is important for the patient to fully understand their choices so they can make an informed decision.
Dental Implants Versus Dental Bridge
A dental bridge is an excellent option to replace one or two missing teeth in one area of the mouth. Some patients are not a candidate for dental implants so a dental in bridge may be the way to go. A dental bridge uses two dental crowns connected with a fake tooth called a pontic to replace a missing tooth. A bridge does require healthy neighboring teeth to support the fake tooth and those healthy teeth have to be compromised by being prepared for a crown. To prepare a tooth for a crown, a small bit of enamel is removed from all surfaces of the tooth to make space for the crown.
Since a dental bridge sits above the gumline, there is opportunity for the jaw bone to deteriorate in that area which could lead to more severe problems down the road including additional tooth loss.
Unlike bridges, dental implants support bone health because the implant is placed directly into the jaw bone and helps stimulate bone regeneration, just like natural tooth roots. This prevents the deterioration that comes along with other restorations.
Dental implants are a more invasive procedure since they do require surgery and an extensive amount of healing time. After an implant is placed, it is left to heal and integrate with the jaw bone for up to six months before it is restored with a tooth. Once the implant is fully integrated, your dentist can place the implant crown to replace the missing tooth.
Which one is more durable?
Dental implants are incredibly stable and have the ability to last a lifetime whereas a dental bridge will likely need to be replaced within 10 years. Both dental implants and dental bridges have great aesthetic qualities! Advances in dental technology enable doctors to provide their patients with dental restorations that are incredibly natural-looking and comfortable.
How do I care for a bridge or implant?
Regardless of which restoration you choose, it is vital to continue visiting your dentist at least twice a year. At your regular dental cleanings, your dentist will be able to check the restoration and make sure that it is stable and healthy with no underlying issues. Periodontal disease is one of the leading causes of tooth loss so it is imperative that you not only continue regular oral hygiene but improve your standards so that you do not have more issues down the road.
Not everyone is a candidate for dental implant placement surgery so be sure to discuss your options with your dentist if you are looking to replace a tooth to restore your smile! Your dentist will help you make the best selection for your individual case and lifestyle.
