ANTHEM PERIO, LAS VEGAS' CHOICE FOR ADVANCED PERIODONTICS

Scheduling regular periodontal maintenance is essential to diagnose, treat, and provide treatment for gum disease. Gum disease is an inflammatory condition of the gums and bone that is caused by bacteria attacking the tissues around your teeth. Because symptoms appear gradually, many patients are not aware they have developed gum disease, and the issue is not identified unless by a periodontist during a regular cleaning or periodontal maintenance exam. Early indications of gum disease include gums that bleed while flossing, gums that have begun to recede, swollen or bright red gums, and/or halitosis. Indications that gum disease has advanced to a more severe stage include teeth that have become loosened or fallen out and the deterioration of the jawbone. In addition to damaging the overall functionality of your teeth and diminishing the aesthetic appearance of your smile, studies indicate that gum disease may also play a role in systemic inflammation, which puts you at an increased risk of developing serious health issues, such as heart disease, stroke, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and/or dementia.

Periodontal Maintenance Procedures

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, adults should schedule a periodontal evaluation annually and periodontal maintenance every three months for patients who are at an increased risk of developing gum disease. During your first periodontal exam, we will review your medical and dental history, paying particular attention to any medications you are taking or conditions you are being treated for that may impact your periodontal health and inform the type of periodontal care we provide. Next, we will examine your teeth, gums, bone structure and bite to determine your overall periodontal health.

While examining your gums, we will use a special tool to measure the depth of your pockets. Healthy pockets will measure 3 millimeters or less in depth. If pockets are deeper than 3 millimeters, this may be an indication that gum disease is present, in which case it will be necessary to perform a deep cleaning, scaling and root planing procedure, and additional procedures if necessary. We will also measure any recession of the gums that has occurred and examine if there are indications of plaque, inflamed gums and/or loose teeth. If gum recession has occurred, it may be necessary to schedule a corrective procedure, such as gum grafting or Pinhole Surgical Technique. During this evaluation, it may also be necessary to take X-rays or other diagnostic tests to determine the current health of the jawbone.

Proper Care Reduces Risk of Developing Gum Disease

Scheduling regular periodontal maintenance every three months is one of the most important steps you can take to maintain your oral health and identify and correct issues before they develop into something more significant. In addition to regular periodontal maintenance, it is also important to practice consistent good care of your oral health at home. Make it a habit to brush your teeth twice daily (at a minimum) for at least two minutes each time. Also, remember to brush your tongue and cheeks, as well as behind the lower and upper front teeth. It is also important to floss at least once a day and be mindful of the type of foods and beverages you consume. By following these best practices, you will significantly reduce your risk of developing gum disease and continue to enjoy good oral health!
