Other Biologic Materials That Support Healing
While plasma-rich growth factors and platelet-rich fibrin are valuable options for many patients, they are not the only biologic materials that may be used to support healing and regeneration. Depending on your needs, our team may recommend alternative regenerative materials that help promote bone or tissue repair without requiring a blood draw or in-office blood processing.
Examples of these materials may include growth factor-based products or enamel matrix derivative materials, such as GEM 21S or Emdogain. These options are designed to help support the regeneration of periodontal structures, including bone and soft tissue, in select cases. GEM 21S is indicated for certain periodontal defects, including intrabony periodontal defects, furcation defects, and gingival recession associated with periodontal defects. Emdogain is an enamel matrix derivative used in regenerative periodontal therapy and has been studied for periodontal tissue regeneration in intrabony defects.
These alternative materials may be recommended when they are a better fit for the procedure, the treatment area, or the patient’s overall needs. In some cases, they may also provide a more efficient or cost-conscious option because they do not require collecting and processing the patient’s blood. Plasma-rich growth factors and platelet-rich fibrin may still be the preferred option in many situations, but treatment is not one-size-fits-all.

Because the material comes from your own blood, no donor tissue is required for this part of the treatment.
