Why Do I Need a Sinus Lift?

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that may be necessary for some patients before dental implants can be placed. While it may sound intimidating to learn that you need to undergo the procedure, patients have nothing to worry about. Sinus lifts have been in use for many years. The treatment is incredibly safe and effective. In most cases, a patient needs a sinus lift to replace lost or inadequate bone tissue near the sinus cavities.

Sinus Cavity

The sinuses are empty cavities that are filled with air. They are located above the upper back teeth on both sides of the nose. Dental implants are commonly used to replace missing teeth. Because implants are so durable and secure, they can even be used for missing teeth in the upper jaw, which endure strong forces from chewing.

Jawbone

The upper area of the jawbone can often be thinner compared to other areas. It’s possible that the jawbone was thin to begin with, but it is often thinner than normal due to bone loss. Bone loss or resorption often occurs following the loss or extraction of natural teeth. The tooth actually stimulates the jawbone through routine chewing. This stimulation helps renew and rejuvenate old bone cells, preventing bone loss. When a lost tooth is not replaced in a timely manner, it can quickly result in bone resorption.

Sinus Lift Candidates

Sinus lifts are an excellent treatment used to replace lost bone tissue. The goal of the procedure is to ensure there is adequate bone tissue required to support the dental implants. While it is considered to be a surgical procedure, it is minimally invasive, and the team will ensure that patients remain comfortable throughout the procedure.

Procedure

The dental team will obtain dental X-rays and a CT scan to determine if the patient would be a good candidate for a sinus lift. This will also provide improved visibility of the structures receiving treatment, are identify nerves and blood vessels which should be avoided. During the sinus lift, the dental team will know where to strategically place the bone graft.

The oral surgeon will make a small incision in the gums to expose the jawbone. A small window is then cut into the jawbone, exposing the membrane between the jawbone and the sinus cavities. The membrane is then lifted out of the way, which creates additional space for the jawbone. Lastly, the space is filled with bone grafting material, and sutures are used to close the gums.

Recovery

In most cases, it will take about three months for the bone graft to heal. Once the graft heals and fuses to the jawbone, the dental implants can be placed. Sinus lifts extend the overall treatment time, but are an excellent solution for ensuring the dental implant procedure is effective.
