How Long Does a Sinus Lift Take to Heal?

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an excellent solution used to restore the function and appearance of missing teeth. In some cases, patients require additional procedures before the implant can be placed. This may include things such as a sinus lift needed to add structure to the jawbone. In order for the jawbone to accommodate an implant, it must have adequate bone tissue.

Sinus Lift

While the sinus lift is a surgical procedure, it is far less complicated than it was in the past. Based on recent enhancements in technology and modern techniques, the sinus lift is less invasive, and the recovery time is expedited.

The goal of a sinus lift is to add structure to the upper jawbone. In order to strengthen the jaw, bone grafting is typically required. In most cases, a sinus lift is completed for patients who want dental implants. A sinus lift may even be needed for procedures such as All-on-4 implants, which require fewer implants.

Procedure

The dental professional will first determine the number of implants needed. They will then determine if any additional procedures, such as bone grafting, are required to support the implants. If necessary, the sinus lift will be completed and heal first before proceeding with the placement of implants. It can take anywhere from six to nine months for the mouth to heal after a sinus lift. During the recovery, there may be some pain and discomfort.

During the sinus lift surgery, the dentist will create an incision where the implant is to be placed in the jawbone. The procedure works by pushing the bone up and then placing bone graft material. Various bone grafting materials can be used, including bone tissue from other places in the patient’s body, donor bone tissue, and synthetic materials.

Aftercare

As with any surgical procedure, there are potential complications associated with a sinus lift. These complications are rare, and the greatest risk is the development of an infection. While bone grafting has a high success rate, there is a possibility for the body to reject the bone grafts.

While there may be a temptation to like inside the mouth, avoid trying to look at the stitches. Patients should also focus on consuming soft and mild foods. Do not eat hard, crunchy, or chewy foods which can damage the sensitive gums. In addition, patients should not use straws which can cause issues with the wound, such as dry sockets.

Recovery

On average, it takes patients about six to nine months to recover and heal from a sinus lift procedure. The bone graft, which is placed during the procedure, must integrate with the existing jawbone. This must take place prior to the placement of dental implants.

Rest

During the recovery process, it is important for patients to take time to rest and heal. Wait until you receive clearance from your dental team before brushing and flossing. Use caution when sneezing or blowing your nose, as this can cause added sinus pressure.
